While books were displayed on chairs, JoAn and Jan recorded in the hallway; and Rhonda burned CD’s in a small room. We love our volunteers.
The Barnes and Noble Book Drives have begun! WSP is the recipient at Sunset Valley and Hill Country Galleria Barnes and Noble bookstores during the months of November and December.
As for my experience as a first-time volunteer (a recorder), I was very surprised at how simple and fun it was. I struggled to restrain laughter with one mom as we snickered over how comical her dragon roar was, or her random comments about how big something was in the book on Big things. There were also times when I was very tired or anxious, such as when the moms picked chapter books and read 15-20 minutes of a book (I later learned that I should have cut them off by 10 minutes, and let them know ahead of time that would happen).
The messages the moms left for their children on the recordings really struck me as the essence of WSP. The stories are two-dimensional, the sensory input of words and the imagination interpreting the words, but the mother’s love is a third dimension that only her children can enter.
So I had to drive back to Pruitt’s and give the ladies who work there a surprise GIFT of beer as of course it couldn’t be allowed on the prison property! We all had a good laugh- I am sure Pat and Lynne will tease me about it for years.
As soon as I got home, I was yearning for a cold beer!
As part of the Matthew:25 project, St. Thomas Episcopal School donated mailers and a total of 206 books this year!
Thank you Wanda, for 10 years of volunteering with WSP!!
On Saturday, Sept. 10th – she volunteered at Woodman Jail which marked her 10th year as a fabulous volunteer. (Her very first visit was to Woodman Jail.) Wanda was one of the first volunteers to help at the Texas Book Festival, and she’s brought many new volunteers to WSP from the Sun City Non-Profit Fair and Grace Episcopal Church in Georgetown.
