Volunteer Spotlight: Jessica Cohen — From Handshake Posting to Heartfelt Mission

Sometimes the path to purpose begins with a simple job listing.

Jessica Cohen first came across Women’s Storybook Project of Texas through a Handshake posting for a video editing internship. But once she read about our mission — and how we believe in the power of literature to transcend physical space — she knew she wanted to be involved in any capacity.

That decision has made a lasting impact on our work, and on her.

A Moment That Changed Everything

Like many of our volunteers, Jessica can point to a single moment when the mission stopped being abstract and became deeply personal.

“The first time I volunteered in the office, I was working on preparing a package and came across a very touching letter that a mother wrote for her child. In that moment, the impact of what WSP was doing hit me hard.”

It’s a feeling that so many of our volunteers describe — the quiet, powerful realization that this work reaches far beyond our office walls.

Putting Her Skills to Work

Jessica has contributed her time and creativity in meaningful ways. She’s helped prepare care packages, assisted with short-form video production drawn from our archived material, and played a key role in creating our Storybook Over the Years — a five-minute retrospective video now live on YouTube that celebrates more than two decades of WSP’s work.

Her Message to You

If you’ve been on the fence about volunteering, Jessica’s words say it best:

“I would tell them how I have witnessed the impact of the program through my volunteer work, from the packages I’ve helped prepare to the videos I’ve edited highlighting the work WSP has done for more than two decades. I would strongly encourage them to be part of the organization in any capacity. It is a very fulfilling experience.”

We couldn’t agree more. Thank you, Jessica, for your time, your talent, and your heart. We are so grateful to have you as part of the WSP family.
